AACSB

The Introduction

The Association to Advance Collegiate School of Business(AACSB) was founded in 1916 in USA, this is a non-government organization which provides the accreditation services to worldwide school of business and management worldwide. It is one of the top business accreditation associations. AACSB was initiated by Harvard Business School, University of Chicago and Northwestern University. Currently, there are 1,000 members around the world. Only 570 academic institutions have been accredited. Moreover, only top one-sixth business and management school can be awarded this honor. The accreditation focuses on the quality, emphasizes that each university should have its own mission, target and characteristics. It not only evaluates the school, the faculty, but also concerns the educational responsibility to students and the assurance of learning. The accreditation will represent the international recognition of our commitment to the quality and continuous improvement in school, faculty and students.

AACSB holds many seminars, workshops and conferences every year. The purpose is to communicate the best practice, emerging issues, thoughts and experiences among members. This networking provides advanced information, suggestions and also enhances the quality level of education, the curriculum, the teaching skills and the operating in school of business and management.

There are twenty member schools in the Taiwan presently. Among them, there are five schools awarded the accreditation. They are “Fu Jen Catholic University”, “National Sun Yat-sen University”, “National Chengchi University”, “National Chiao Tung University” and National Taiwan University. There are eleven schools now in Pre-Accreditation process.

The Accreditation Standards

The accreditation standards can be classified as: 

  1. Purpose and Strategic Management
  2. Participants
  3. Assurance of Learning

The three aspects include 21 criteria of accreditation; each criterion is connected with the purposes and goals of the school. The accredited schools will need to maintain the accreditation criteria and submit the annual report. Every five years, those schools should take the review again with revised documents. During the accreditation process, it is critical to set up the vision of the school and explain the rational between resources and vision.

Application Procedure

Thirteen Steps in Accreditation Process

  1. Membership
  2. Complete Eligibility criteria form
  3. Enter Pre-accreditation process and mentor assigned
  4. Develop Alignment plan
  5. Pre Accreditation Committee approves alignment plan
  6. Scope of review approved
  7. Initial Accreditation Committee (IAC) approves the plan
  8. School implements the plan
  9. Enter Accreditation process-peer review team assigned
  10. Self evaluation report (SER)
  11. Visit
  12. Become an accredited member
  13. Maintenance

The progress

The AACSB office for Tamkang University was established in January 2010. Tamkang University has became the member and is entering the pre-accreditation process presently.
